Ryle, \u201cThe Gospel of Luke\u201d 1858)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe leading priests and teachers of religious law<br \/>\nwere actively plotting Jesus\u2019 murder.\u201d\u00a0Luke 22:2<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nHigh offices in the church do not preserve the<br \/>\nholders of them from great blindness and sin.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first step in putting Christ to death, was taken<br \/>\nby the religious teachers of the Jewish nation. The<br \/>\nvery men who ought to have welcomed the Messiah,<br \/>\nwere the men who conspired to kill Him. The very<br \/>\npastors who ought to have rejoiced at the appearing<br \/>\nof the Lamb of God, had the chief hand in slaying<br \/>\nHim! These were the very men who crucified the Lord<br \/>\nof glory! With all their boasted knowledge, they were<br \/>\nfar more ignorant than the few Galilean fishermen<br \/>\nwho followed Christ!<\/p>\n<p>Let us beware of attaching an excessive importance<br \/>\nto\u00a0<strong>ministers<\/strong> of religion because of their office.<\/p>\n<p>Ordination and office confer no exemption from error.<\/p>\n<p>The greatest\u00a0<strong>heresies<\/strong> have been sown, and<br \/>\nthe greatest\u00a0<strong>practical abuses <\/strong>introduced into<br \/>\nthe church by ordained men!<\/p>\n<p>We must test all teachers by the unerring rule of the<br \/>\nWord of God. It matters little\u00a0<strong>who<\/strong> says a thing in<br \/>\nreligion. But it matters greatly\u00a0<strong>what<\/strong> it is that is said.<\/p>\n<p>Is it scriptural?<\/p>\n<p>Is it true?<\/p>\n<p>This is the only question.<\/p>\n<p>The lengths to which men may go in religion, and yet<br \/>\nbe without grace, is far greater than we suppose.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>High offices in the church (J.
