Death had a lawful hold on them. Christ Jesus came to give his life a<em>ransom<\/em> to free them from death. He paid by dying in their place. His\u00a0<em>life<\/em> was the\u00a0<em>ransom<\/em>. Since he paid the\u00a0<em>ransom<\/em> they are free. They can never die. The Lord Jesus said that he came\u00a0<em>to give his life a ransom for many <\/em>(Matthew 20: 28.)<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Redeem<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In scripture the word\u00a0<em>redeem<\/em> is very similar to the word\u00a0<em>ransom<\/em>. For example,\u00a0<strong><em>I will <\/em><\/strong><em>ransom<\/em><strong><em>them from the power of the grave; I will <\/em><\/strong><em>redeem<\/em><strong><em> them from death (Hosea 13:14.)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In scripture, when a person owed money they would sell their things. Sometimes the person sold himself. He would become another person\u2019s servant. God made a way for the person to be freed. First, the proper price had to be paid. This was called the\u00a0<em>redemption<\/em> price. After the<em>redemption<\/em> price was paid, the person or things were freed or\u00a0<em>redeemed<\/em>. In scripture the one who paid the\u00a0<em>redemption <\/em>price was called the\u00a0<em>redeemer<\/em>. When the person could not pay, then their nearest of kin became their\u00a0<em>redeemer<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The children of God lost everything when they sinned. They could not\u00a0<em>redeem<\/em> themselves so their nearest of kin, God\u2019s Son, paid all their debt for them.
