Philpot)<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Godly sorrow<\/strong> brings repentance that<br \/>\nleads to salvation and leaves no regret,<br \/>\nbut <strong>worldly sorrow<\/strong> brings death.\u201d<br \/>\n2 Cor. 7:10<\/p>\n<p>These <strong>two kinds of repentance <\/strong>are to be carefully<br \/>\ndistinguished from each other; though they are often<br \/>\nsadly confounded. <strong>Cain, Esau, Saul, Ahab, Judas,<\/strong> <strong>all<br \/>\nrepented.<\/strong> But their repentance was the remorse of<br \/>\nnatural conscience, not the godly sorrow of a broken<br \/>\nheart and a contrite spirit. They trembled before God<br \/>\nas an angry Judge, but were not melted into contrition<br \/>\nbefore Him as a forgiving Father.<\/p>\n<p>They neither hated their sins nor forsook them.<br \/>\nThey neither loved holiness nor sought it.<br \/>\n<strong>Cain <\/strong>went out from the presence of the Lord.<br \/>\n<strong>Esau<\/strong> plotted Jacob\u2019s death.<br \/>\n<strong>Saul<\/strong> consulted the witch of Endor.<br \/>\n<strong>Ahab<\/strong> put honest Micaiah into prison.<br \/>\n<strong>Judas<\/strong> hanged himself.<\/p>\n<p>How different from this forced and false repentance<br \/>\nof a reprobate, is the repentance of a child of God;<br \/>\nthat true repentance for sin, that godly sorrow, that<br \/>\nholy mourning which flows from the Spirit\u2019s gracious<br \/>\noperations!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Godly sorrow<\/strong> does not spring from a sense of the<br \/>\nwrath of God in a broken law, but from His mercy<br \/>\nin a blessed gospel; from a view by faith of the<br \/>\nsufferings of Christ in the garden and on the cross;<br \/>\nfrom a manifestation of pardoning love; and is always<br \/>\nattended with self-loathing and self-abhorrence; with<br \/>\ndeep and unreserved confession of sin and forsaking<br \/>\nit; with most hearty, sincere and earnest petitions to<br \/>\nbe kept from all evil; and a holy longing to live to the<br \/>\npraise and glory of God.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cain, Esau, Saul, Ahab, Judas (J.
