There is much indeed in ourselves of which we<\/p>\n\n\n\n
have reason truly to be ashamed, and to be filled<\/p>\n\n\n\n
with profound self abhorrence. We have need to<\/p>\n\n\n\n
be ashamed . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
of our unbelief;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
of our low thoughts of the Savior;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
of our little love to God;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
of our slow advance in the divine life;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
of our imperfect conformity to Christ;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
of the power of indwelling sin;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
of our slender spiritual attainments in . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
knowledge,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
personal holiness, and<\/p>\n\n\n\n
heavenly meekness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What shamefacedness should cover us,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
that we are so ready . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
to compromise,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
to falter, and<\/p>\n\n\n\n
to halt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
How deeply humbled should we be that there<\/p>\n\n\n\n
still exists in us so much carnality, love of the<\/p>\n\n\n\n
world, and conformity to the world; so little of<\/p>\n\n\n\n
the crucified spirit of a cross bearing Savior!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What cause of shame that, with all our profession,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
the pulse of spiritual life beats in our souls so faintly,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
the spirit of prayer breathes in us so feebly, that we<\/p>\n\n\n\n
possess so little real, vital religion, and follow Christ<\/p>\n\n\n\n
at so great a distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Filled with self abasement should we be, that the<\/p>\n\n\n\n
fruits and graces of the Spirit are in us so sickly,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
drooping, and dwarfed; that we have so limited<\/p>\n\n\n\n
a measure of faith, love, and humility; are so<\/p>\n\n\n\n
defective in our patience and meekness, wisdom,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and gentleness; that, with all our blossom and<\/p>\n\n\n\n
foliage, there is so little real fruit to the glory<\/p>\n\n\n\n
of our Father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
May we not, in view of all this, exclaim with Ezra,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
in his deep grief and humiliation for the sins of the<\/p>\n\n\n\n
people, \u201cO my God, I am utterly ashamed; I blush<\/p>\n\n\n\n
to lift up my face to You. For our sins are piled<\/p>\n\n\n\n
higher than our heads, and our guilt has reached<\/p>\n\n\n\n
to the heavens.\u201d Ezra 9:6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Oh, where shall we fly; where shall we hide<\/p>\n\n\n\n
our blushing face but in the blood of atonement!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
sprinkled afresh with which, we may lift up our<\/p>\n\n\n\n
