I am quite sick of modern religion\u2014it is such<\/p>\n\n\n\n
a mixture, such a medley, such a compromise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I find much, indeed, of this religion in my own<\/p>\n\n\n\n
heart, for it suits the flesh well\u2014but I would<\/p>\n\n\n\n
not have it so, and grieve it should be so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The religion which I want is that of the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I know nothing but what He teaches me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I feel nothing but what He works in me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I believe nothing but what He shows me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I only mourn when He smites my rocky heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I only rejoice when He reveals the Savior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This religion I am seeking after, though miles and<\/p>\n\n\n\n
miles from it\u2014but no other will satisfy or content me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When the blessed Spirit is not at work in me,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and with me, I fall back into all the . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
darkness,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
unbelief,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
earthliness,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
idleness,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
carelessness,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
infidelity, and<\/p>\n\n\n\n
helplessness<\/p>\n\n\n\n
of my Adam nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
True religion is a supernatural and mysterious thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Gospel<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gospel is the master-work of Jehovah,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
presenting the greatest display of His manifold<\/p>\n\n\n\n
wisdom, and the most costly exhibition of the<\/p>\n\n\n\n
riches of His grace. In constructing it He would<\/p>\n\n\n\n
seem to have summoned to His aid all the<\/p>\n\n\n\n
resources of His own infinity . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His fathomless wisdom,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His boundless love,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His illimitable grace,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His infinite power,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His spotless holiness,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
all contributed their glory, and conspired<\/p>\n\n\n\n
to present it to the universe as the most<\/p>\n\n\n\n
consummate piece of Divine workmanship!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The revelations it makes,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
the facts it records,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
the doctrines it propounds,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
the effects is produces,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
proclaim it to be the \u201cglorious<\/p>\n\n\n\n
gospel of the blessed God.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We live encircled by shadows . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
our friends are shadows,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
our comforts are shadows,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
our supports are shadows,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
our pursuits are shadows, and<\/p>\n\n\n\n
we ourselves are shadows passing away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But in the precious gospel we have substance,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
we have reality, we have that which remains<\/p>\n\n\n\n
with us when all other things disappear, leaving<\/p>\n\n\n\n
the soul desolate, the heart bleeding, and the<\/p>\n\n\n\n
spirit bowed in sorrow to the dust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But the gospel . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
guides our perplexities,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
mitigates our griefs,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
sanctifies our sorrows,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
heals our wounds,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
dries our tears,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
because it leads us to . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
the love,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
the tenderness,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
the sympathy,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
the grace of Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The gospel . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
reveals Jesus,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
speaks mainly of Jesus,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
leads simply to Jesus,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and this makes it \u201cglad tidings of great joy,\u201d to<\/p>\n\n\n\n
a poor, lost, ruined, tried, and tempted sinner!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
