If you want to see what sin really is<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Philpot, \u201cSin Condemned and Righteousness Fulfilled\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To cast the sinning angels out of heaven;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to banish Adam from Paradise;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to destroy the old world by a flood;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to burn Sodom and Gomorrah with fire from heaven\u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n

these examples of God\u2019s displeasure against sin were<\/p>\n\n\n\n

not sufficient to express His condemnation of it. He<\/p>\n\n\n\n

would therefore take another way of making it manifest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And what was this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By sending His own Son out of His bosom, and offering<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Him as a sacrifice for sin upon the tree at Calvary, He<\/p>\n\n\n\n

would make it manifest how He abhorred sin, and how<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His righteous character must forever condemn it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

See here the love of God to poor guilty man in not<\/p>\n\n\n\n

sparing His own Son; and yet the hatred of God against<\/p>\n\n\n\n

sin, in condemning it in the death of Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is almost as if God said, \u201cIf you want to see what<\/p>\n\n\n\n

sin really is, you cannot see it in the depths of hell. I<\/p>\n\n\n\n

will show you sin in blacker colors still\u2013 you shall see<\/p>\n\n\n\n

it in the sufferings of My dear Son; in His agonies of<\/p>\n\n\n\n

body and soul; and in what He as a holy, innocent<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lamb endured under My wrath, when He consented<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to take the sinner\u2019s place.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What wondrous wisdom,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

what depths of love,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

what treasures of mercy,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

what heights of grace<\/p>\n\n\n\n

were thus revealed and brought to light in God\u2019s<\/p>\n\n\n\n

unsparing condemnation of sin, and yet in His<\/p>\n\n\n\n

full and free pardon of the sinner!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have ever had a view by faith of the suffering<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Son of God in the garden and upon the cross; if you<\/p>\n\n\n\n

have ever seen the wrath of God due to you, falling<\/p>\n\n\n\n

upon the head of the God-Man; and viewed a bleeding,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

agonizing Immanuel; then you have seen and felt in<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the depths of your conscience what a dreadful thing<\/p>\n\n\n\n

sin is. Then the broken-hearted child of God looks<\/p>\n\n\n\n

unto Him whom he has pierced, and mourns and grieves<\/p>\n\n\n\n

bitterly for Him, as for a firstborn son who has died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under this sight he feels what a dreadful thing sin is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh,\u201d he says, \u201cdid God afflict His dear Son? Did<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jesus, the darling of God, endure all these sufferings<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and sorrows to save my soul from the bottomless pit?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O, can I ever hate sin enough? Can I ever grieve and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

mourn over it enough? Can my stony heart ever be<\/p>\n\n\n\n

dissolved into contrition enough, when by faith I see<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the agonies, and hear the groans of the suffering,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

bleeding Lamb of God?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christians hate their sins. They hate that sinful, that<\/p>\n\n\n\n

dreadfully sinful flesh of theirs which has so often,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

which has so continually, betrayed them into sin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And thus they join with God in passing condemnation<\/p>\n\n\n\n

upon the whole of their flesh; upon all its actings and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

workings; upon all its thoughts and words and deeds;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and hate it as the prolific parent of that sin which<\/p>\n\n\n\n

crucified Christ, and torments and plagues them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
