His children began to hiss!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Excerpts from the letters of William Tiptaft)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dear brother,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since I last wrote, I have preached in Abingdon Great<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Church, on Christmas evening. I preached the truth, I<\/p>\n\n\n\n

trust, to a very crowded congregation, supposed to be<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(sitting and standing, who were able to get in) about<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5,000 people. I pleased the believers; but very much<\/p>\n\n\n\n

displeased the carnally-minded, who were never before<\/p>\n\n\n\n

so puzzled and confounded in all their lives! I spoke the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

truth faithfully, and so as all could hear; but I had no<\/p>\n\n\n\n

idea that the gospel would have given so much offence!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is the truth that offends and disturbs Satan’s<\/p>\n\n\n\n

kingdom! The neighboring clergymen, who are in<\/p>\n\n\n\n

darkness, say of me, “Away with such a fellow from<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the earth; it is not fit that he should live!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My mind is not moved by the persecution. I believe<\/p>\n\n\n\n

if God has a work for me to do, I shall do it, in spite<\/p>\n\n\n\n

of the devil and all his children!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nature is not changed, the gospel is not changed,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and Christ is not changed. What reason is there why<\/p>\n\n\n\n

they should not hate the truth now, as much as in the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

time of the apostles? I never saw any fruits of my<\/p>\n\n\n\n

labors until I roused and disturbed the ‘roaring lion’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When, through the grace of God, I began to disturb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

his kingdom, I soon found that his children began<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to hiss!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The world and Satan hate believers. The Pharisees<\/p>\n\n\n\n

hate me the most. I cut off all their rotten props,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and all their fleshly devotion!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not coming near to the truth, it is not the ‘mere letter’<\/p>\n\n\n\n

of the gospel, that will convert men; but the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make the Word of God your study. Pin your faith to<\/p>\n\n\n\n

no man’s views! I scarcely read any other book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beware of those who want to exalt man in any manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Darkness of ignorance,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

dungeons of falsehood, and<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

chains of superstition!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

from Spurgeon\u2019s,”WHAT GOD CANNOT DO!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Truth once reigned supreme upon our globe, and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

then earth was Paradise. Man knew no sorrow<\/p>\n\n\n\n

while he was ignorant of falsehood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Father of Lies invaded the garden of bliss,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and with one foul lie he blighted Eden into a<\/p>\n\n\n\n

wilderness, and made man a traitor to his God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cunningly he handled the glittering falsehood<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and made it dazzle in the woman’s eyes- \u201cGod<\/p>\n\n\n\n

knows that in the day you eat thereof, then your<\/p>\n\n\n\n

eyes shall be opened, and you shall be as gods,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

knowing good and evil.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proud ambition rode upon that lie as a conqueror<\/p>\n\n\n\n

in his chariot, and the city of Mansoul opened its<\/p>\n\n\n\n

gates to welcome the fascinating enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As it was a lie which first subjugated the world to Satan’s<\/p>\n\n\n\n

influences, so it is by lies that he secures his throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the heathen his kingdom is quiet and secure,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

because the minds of the people are deluded with a<\/p>\n\n\n\n

false mythology. The domains of Mohammed and the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pope are equally the kingdom of Satan, and his reign<\/p>\n\n\n\n

is undisturbed, for human merit, priestly efficacy,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and a thousand other deceptions buttress his throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The darkness of ignorance, the dungeons of falsehood,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and the chains of superstition, are the main reliance of that<\/p>\n\n\n\n

monster who oppresses all the nations with his infernal tyranny!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supernatural light<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“For God, who commanded the light to shine out<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 of darkness, has shined in our hearts, to give<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the face of Jesus Christ.” 2 Cor. 4:6<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until, then, this supernatural light of God<\/p>\n\n\n\n

enters into the soul, a man has no saving<\/p>\n\n\n\n

knowledge of Jehovah. He may . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  say his prayers,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  read his Bible,  attend preaching,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  observe ordinances,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  bestow all his goods to feed the poor,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  or give his body to be burned;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

but he is as ignorant of God as<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the cattle that graze in the fields!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He may\u2014call himself a Christian, and be<\/p>\n\n\n\n

thought such by others\u2014talk much about<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jesus Christ, hold a sound creed\u2014maintain<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a consistent profession\u2014pray at a prayer<\/p>\n\n\n\n

meeting with fluency and apparent feeling,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

stand up in a pulpit and contend earnestly<\/p>\n\n\n\n

for the doctrines of grace\u2014excel hundreds<\/p>\n\n\n\n

of God’s children in zeal, knowledge and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yet, if this ray of supernatural light has<\/p>\n\n\n\n

never shone into his soul\u2014he is only twofold<\/p>\n\n\n\n

more the child of hell than those who make<\/p>\n\n\n\n

no profession!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Keys of Hell and Death!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spurgeon, “Christ With the Keys of Death and Hell”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I have the keys of hell and of death.” Rev. 1:18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hell and death, terrible powers as they are, are<\/p>\n\n\n\n

not left to riot without government. Jesus holds<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the keys of these dreadful regions!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Death is a land of darkness, yet a sovereign eye<\/p>\n\n\n\n

surveys it, and a master hand holds its key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hell also is a horrible region, where powers of evil<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and of terror hold their high court and dread assembly;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

but hell trembles at the presence of the Lord, and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

there is a throne higher than the throne of evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us rejoice that nothing in heaven, or earth,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

or in places under the earth, is left to itself to<\/p>\n\n\n\n

engender anarchy. Everywhere, serene above<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the floods, the Lord sits as King forever and ever!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No province of the universe<\/p>\n\n\n\n

is free from the divine rule!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Things do not come by chance. Nowhere do chance<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and chaos reign, nowhere is evil really and permanently<\/p>\n\n\n\n

enthroned. Rest assured that the Lord has prepared his<\/p>\n\n\n\n

throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christ has the keys of hell and death!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is the Lord over those dark regions, and rules them<\/p>\n\n\n\n

by his sovereignty. Christ is Lord over hell and death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He actually rules and manages in all the issues of the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

grave, and overrules all the councils of hell, restraining<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the mischievous devices of Satan, or turning them to<\/p>\n\n\n\n

subserve his own designs of good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our Lord Jesus Christ still is supreme! His<\/p>\n\n\n\n

kingdom, willingly or unwillingly, extends over<\/p>\n\n\n\n

all existences in whatever regions they may be!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jesus rules over the damned spirits!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this life they would not have him to rule over<\/p>\n\n\n\n

them, but in the life to come they must submit<\/p>\n\n\n\n

whether they will or not. In that seething caldron<\/p>\n\n\n\n

of hell, every wave of fire is guided by the will<\/p>\n\n\n\n

of Christ, and the mark of his sovereignty is on<\/p>\n\n\n\n

every iron chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus the ungodly will be compelled to feel his rule with<\/p>\n\n\n\n

terror, for although the ferocity of their natures will<\/p>\n\n\n\n

remain, yet the boastfulness of their pride shall be<\/p>\n\n\n\n

taken from them. Though they would still revolt,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

they shall find themselves hopelessly fettered, and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

powerless to accomplish their designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though they would sincerely continue stouthearted<\/p>\n\n\n\n

as Pharaoh, and cry, “Who is the Lord, that we should<\/p>\n\n\n\n

obey his voice?” They shall wring their hands in anguish<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and bite their tongues in despair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the great terrors of the lost in hell will be this,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

that he who came to save was rejected by them,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and now only reveals himself to them as mighty to<\/p>\n\n\n\n

destroy. He who held out the silver scepter when they<\/p>\n\n\n\n

would not touch it, shall forever break them with a<\/p>\n\n\n\n

rod of iron for their willful impenitence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you be destroyed<\/p>\n\n\n\n

in your way, for his wrath can flare up in a moment.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Beware you that forget him, lest he tear<\/p>\n\n\n\n

you in pieces and there be none to deliver.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The penetrating light of the Spirit<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“For God . . . made His light shine in our hearts<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 to give us the light of the knowledge of the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 glory of God in the face of Christ.” 2 Cor. 4:6<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“But you have an anointing from the Holy One,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 and all of you know the truth.” 1 John 2:20<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The only saving light is the light of God shining<\/p>\n\n\n\n

into the soul\u2014giving us to see and know “the only<\/p>\n\n\n\n

true God, and Jesus Christ whom He has sent.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A man may have the clearest light in his judgment,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and yet never have the penetrating light of the Spirit<\/p>\n\n\n\n

producing conviction in his soul. He may have the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

soundest knowledge of the doctrines of grace, and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

see the harmonious scheme of salvation\u2014and yet<\/p>\n\n\n\n

never have by divine teaching, seen a holy God, nor<\/p>\n\n\n\n

have ever felt the spirituality of God’s righteous law<\/p>\n\n\n\n

condemning him as a transgressor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If we do not have this penetrating light of the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spirit, we shall be sure to go astray. We shall . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  be entangled in some error,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  plunge into some heresy,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  imbibe some doctrine of devils,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  drink into some dreadful delusion,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  or fall into some dreadful sin, and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  have our faith shipwrecked forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A false light can but wreck us on the rocks of<\/p>\n\n\n\n

presumption or despair. But the light of divine<\/p>\n\n\n\n

life in the soul is accompanied with all the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

graces of the Spirit. It is . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  the light of the glory of God,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  the light of Jesus’ countenance,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  and the light of the Spirit’s teaching,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and therefore an infallible guide and guard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And this infallible pilot will guide the soul<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to whom it is given safe into the harbor of<\/p>\n\n\n\n

endless rest and peace.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has rescued us!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The human heart is most deceitful and desperately<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?” Jer. 17:9<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 dwells no good thing.” Romans 7:18<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is nothing in man by nature apart from<\/p>\n\n\n\n

God, which is not vile and deceitful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If there is anything good in me,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

if I have been transformed by the renewing of my mind,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

if I am regenerate,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

if I have passed from death unto life,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

if I have been taken out of the family of Satan,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

if I am adopted into the family of God’s dear Son,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

if I am now no longer an heir of wrath,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

if I am a now a child of heaven,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

then all these things are of God, and in no sense,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and in no degree whatever, are they of myself!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“For He has rescued us from the kingdom of<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 darkness and has brought us into the Kingdom<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 of His dear Son.” Colossians 1:13<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most hideous blasphemy ever to be spewed from the pit of\ndarkness!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Universal atonement is the most hideous blasphemy ever to be\nspewed from the pit of darkness! No greater blasphemy ever spewed from the pit\nof Hell, than the blasphemous assertion that Christ died to redeem the\nmultitudes who suffer the wrath of God there!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Universal love, universal grace, and universal redemption \u2014 is\nmeaningless love, meaningless grace, and meaningless redemption. To preach such\nis to preach a meaningless gospel, a meaningless god, and a meaningless savior!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  no love except distinguishing love,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  no redemption except a particular redemption,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  no atonement except a limited atonement,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  no deliverance except an effectual deliverance, and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  no grace except irresistible, omnipotent, saving grace!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Christ loved the church, and gave Himself up for\nher!” Ephesians 5:25<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If there is one thing in this world that everyone wants and very\nfew have, it is rest, real rest of heart and soul before God. Fools imagine\nthat money, property, position, and power will give them rest. Many seek rest\nby giving vent to the pleasures of their vile lusts. Others try to obtain rest\nby morality, works of charity, or the services, rituals, and ceremonies of\nreligion. But all who seek rest in such places must, if they speak honestly,\nconfess, \u201cthe bed is too short to stretch out on and the cover is too narrow to\nwrap up in\u201d (Isa. 28:20).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your religion does not give you rest, your religion is false\n(Jer. 6:16; Matt. 11:28-29; Heb. 4:3). If you make lies your refuge, you will\ntry hard to convince yourself that you have assurance and peace before God\n(Isa. 28:14-20). But in the dark, lonely watches of the night, when you\ncontemplate judgment and eternity, you have no rest! Your soul is in turmoil.\nThe fear of death yet holds you in bondage. But all who trust in the Lord Jesus\nChrist have entered into rest, knowing that all things necessary for their\nsalvation have been done for them. God has chosen them as the objects of His\ngrace in eternal election. Christ has paid their debt to the justice of God by\nHis blood atonement. Righteousness has been imputed to them for justification\nand imparted to them in regeneration. For such people salvation is an absolute\ncertainty. We have God\u2019s Word for it. Why shouldn\u2019t we rest? Does your religion\ngive you rest?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
