This tyrant wields a universal sway!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Henry Law, \u201cNumbers\u201d 1858)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor the wages of sin is DEATH, but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.\u201d Romans 6:23<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DEATH!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The very sound falls heavily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What mind can lightly think of it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What eye unmoved can see it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The limbs<\/strong>, once full of vigour, stir no more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sinews<\/strong>, once elastic in activity, become rigid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The form<\/strong>, so wondrous in its mechanism,
becomes an inert mass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The features<\/strong>, once the reflecting mirror of
ten thousand thoughts, are marble monotony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vessel<\/strong>, once so proudly merry,
lies a deserted wreck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fabric<\/strong>, once so sparkling in beauty,
is a deserted ruin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DEATH! It is more than animation fled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Decay <\/strong>draws near, with a polluting touch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Corruption <\/strong>fastens on its prey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The friends, most dotingly attached, cannot
but turn loathingly away. A stern necessity
requires, that offensive remains be buried
out of sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reader, here pause and meditate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This death is pressing at your <\/strong>heels!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It soon will lay you <\/strong>low.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your weeping friends will hide you in the dust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A forgetting world will go on merrily,
as though you had not been.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Say, do you joyfully await its touch?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can you feel, \u201cDeath comes as with friendly
hand to open the cage door\u2013that my freed
spirit may fly to its high home?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember, you cannot escape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This tyrant wields a universal sway!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But in what cradle is DEATH born? Whence
is it armed with that destroying scythe?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DEATH is transgression\u2019s<\/em> child. Sin is the
womb which bore it. A sinless world would
have been deathless bloom. But the world
is sinful, and therefore is an open tomb.
This earth is one charnel house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a humbling truth. But in this very
darkness there is light. We are not left
bereft of remedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The unclean may be cleansed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All stains may vanish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a fountain <\/em>opened for all soul filth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is full help for foulest need. Where sin
abounds, sin\u2019s cure<\/strong> exceeds. Where pollution
spreads its wide pall, the Savior brings His
wider covering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
