Some beloved idol?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c<\/strong>A drought is<\/em> upon her waters; and they shall be dried up: for it is<\/em> the land of graven images, and they are mad upon their<\/em> idols.<\/strong>\u201d Jeremiah 50:38<\/strong>

Have we not all in our various ways,
set up <\/strong>some beloved idol<\/strong> . . .
  something which engaged our affections<\/strong>,
  something which occupied our thoughts<\/strong>,
  something to which we devoted all the energies of our minds<\/strong>,
  something for which we were willing to labor<\/strong> night and day?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be it money<\/strong>,
be it power<\/strong>,
be it esteem of men<\/strong>,
be it respectability<\/strong>,
be it worldly comfort<\/strong>,
be it literary knowledge<\/strong>,
there was a secret setting up of SELF in one or<\/strong>
<\/strong>more of its various forms, and a bowing down<\/strong>
<\/strong>to it as an idol.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man of business makes money<\/strong> his god.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man of pleasure makes the lust of the flesh<\/strong> his god.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proud man makes his adored SELF <\/strong>his god.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pharisee makes self-righteousness<\/strong> his god.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Arminian makes free-will<\/strong> his god.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Calvinist makes dry doctrine<\/strong> his god.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All in one way or other, however they may differ
in the object of their idolatrous worship, agree in
this: that they give a preference in their esteem
and affection to their peculiar idol, above the one
